Video: S.C. armed robbery suspect jumps from car with handgun before fatal OIS

GREENVILLE, S.C. —The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage from a January officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of an armed robbery suspect, WYFF reported.

The incident began when deputies were alerted on Jan. 23 about an armed robbery at a gas station, according to the report. The suspect had held a clerk at gunpoint before fleeing in a black vehicle with a temporary tag.

At 2:30 p.m., deputies located a man suspected in the robbery parked outside a hotel room, according to the report. The video shows deputies surrounding his vehicle as he attempted to back up and escape. A deputy then drove into his car, pinning it against a pole.

Deputies ordered the man to exit the vehicle and saw him reaching for something. The footage shows the suspect jumping from the car with a pistol and running before six deputies opened fire, striking him multiple times.

The man died from his injuries, according to the report. Deputies later recovered a loaded .40-caliber handgun from the scene.

The sheriff’s office said its internal investigation determined the deputies’ use of force was justified.
