CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. — The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office released body camera footage showing a man wearing ballistic gear and charging at officers with a crowbar, leading to a fatal officer-involved shooting, KSBW reported.
Carmel Police Department officers were called to respond after a man was seen carrying a BB rifle that resembled a weapon on Oct. 25, according to the report. The man, who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, was dressed in tactical gear and equipped with pepper spray, a knife, a crowbar and the BB rifle.

When confronted by Carmel Police Chief Paul Tomasi, Sgt. Gerald Maldonado and Officer Rene Guevara, the man initially ignored orders to disarm, leading officers to fire bean bag rounds, which were ineffective, according to the report.
“Drop the crowbar. We don’t want to shoot you,” Tomasi can be heard saying in the video.
As the man advanced with the crowbar, Guevara fired five shots, while Maldonado continued with bean bags until the man was subdued. He later died from his injuries.
An investigation by the district attorney’s office is ongoing, according to the report.
