Veterans Day 2023: Here’s what’s open and closed on Friday and Saturday

Veteran’s Day honors and celebrates the service military veterans gave to the United States, a tradition that started after World War I, and falls on Nov. 11 every year.

For 2023, Veteran’s Day will be on a Saturday, meaning some businesses could also be closed on Friday.

Here’s a list of what will be open and closed on Veteran’s Day 2023 and the Friday before, including highway and transportation information.

Government

  • Federal offices: Open Friday, Closed Saturday
  • U.S. District Courts: Open Friday, Closed Saturday
  • Springfield Armory National Historic Site: Open 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday
  • Post Office: There will be normal Post Office operations on Friday, including mail delivery and retail services. Post Offices will be closed on Saturday in observance, with no mail delivery or retail services.
  • State offices: Open Friday, Closed Saturday
  • Massachusetts state parks: Open Friday and Saturday, with free parking to all visitors from Nov. 10-12
  • City and town offices: Many closed Friday in observance, including Boston, Springfield and Worcester; check your town’s website. All closed Saturday.
  • Schools: Many closed Friday in observance, including Boston, Springfield and Worcester Public Schools.
  • Registry of Motor Vehicles: Open Friday except on Nantucket; locations normally open on Saturdays will be closed.
  • Banks: Varies by institution; some open Friday and closed Saturday, vice versa or closed both days. Check with your bank to see branch and service hours.
  • Most banks will be closed Friday, according to the Massachusetts Bankers Association. But customers should check with their bank.

Malls (open hours for both Friday and Saturday)

Retail (open hours for both Friday and Saturday)

  • Walmart: 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Target: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m; closing times vary by location on Saturday
  • Kohl’s: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (offering 30% discount to military members and their families)
  • CVS: Stores open regular hours; varies by location on Saturday
  • Walgreens: Stores open regular hours; varies by location on Saturday (offering 20% discount to military members and their families)
  • Rite-Aid: Stores open regular hours; varies by location on Saturday
  • Liquor stores: Open in both Massachusetts and Connecticut

Grocery (open hours for both Friday and Saturday)

  • Aldi: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Big Y: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Price-Rite: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Stop & Shop: Open 6 or 7 a.m.; closing times vary by location
  • Trader Joe’s: Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Wegmans: Open 6 a.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Whole Foods: Open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Transportation

  • MBTA: The MBTA will operate on its regular weekday schedule on Friday and Saturday. Check mbta.com for details; passengers can use the $10 holiday weekend ticket for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • PVTA: Saturday will be on a Sunday Service Schedule; customer service offices will be closed on Friday. Visit pvta.com for additional service information.
  • Franklin Regional Transit Authority: Regular bus service.
  • Worcester Regional Transit Authority: Regular service; however, the WRTA cautioned possible detours and delays on Rte. 30 for the parade scheduled for 11 a.m.
  • Hartford Line: CTrail Hartford Line and Amtrak trains will have regular service.
