ARLINGTON, Texas — As is the case for any pitcher who’s undergone Tommy John surgery, Liam Hendriks has traveled a long road in his recovery.
Lately, however, there’s hope that the journey is nearing its destination.

The Red Sox plan to have Hendriks throw live batting practice this coming week, likely Tuesday in Kansas City. Two more will follow in short order, after which, assuming no further setbacks, Hendriks will begin a minor league rehab assignment with the chance to contribute to the major league team in September.
“I don’t know how long the rehab assignment will be,” said Alex Cora. “This is a huge step, but it’s nothing for him compared to what he’s gone through the last few years.”
That was in reference to Hendriks’ battle with cancer several years ago, which makes even a major procedure like Tommy John surgery seem minor by comparison.
“I had a feeling that this was going to happen,” said Cora of the progress made by Hendriks. “We’re getting close. How close, I don’t know. But the fact he’s throwing live BP next week is awesome. It’s good news for everybody.”
It’s too soon to know how much Hendriks might contribute in 2024. He’s made just five appearances in games since the end of 2022, missing time first to battle lymphoma, then a torn ligament in his elbow.
“I mean, we’ll see,” said Cora. “But he’s done everything the right way, not cutting corners. He was good (when he was healthy), he was really good (compiling 114 saves with a 2.26 ERA between 2019-2023). To have him, you never know, in September when rosters expand, for him to be part of this, would be helpful.”
