Vaughn Grissom’s perfect evening helps WooSox open series against Rochester in style

Through one inning of action, Worcester was down but not out against Rochester on Tuesday night.

Though the road team trailed by two runs to begin the second, the Red Sox’s offense countered with 10 combined runs during the second, third, fifth, and eighth innings to earn an eventual 11-5 win against the Red Wings at Innovative Field.

Vaughn Grissom (4-for-4) drove in a team-high three RBIs to help Worcester improve to 45-42 after its second consecutive win.

The bottom of the Red Sox’s lineup, Trayce Thompson (3-for-5), Nathan Hickey (1-for-4), and Seby Zavala (1-for-5) drove in two runs each.

Complete game statistics can be found here.

On the pitching side, meanwhile, starter Kyle Harrison allowed four earned runs and struck out four over five innings of work to earn his first-season win. Worcester then used a three-person bullpen that only allowed one earned run over the final four innings.

Grissom helped the Red Sox score first as he singled home Kristian Campbell on a grounder to right field in the top of the first inning.

The momentum was short-lived, though, as Yohandy Morales (solo) and Nick Schnell (two-run) responded with multiple blasts in the bottom half to move Rochester (31-54) ahead entering the second.

Last week, Worcester found itself in an offensive slump, having scored only one run in its previous two games. But during Sunday’s series finale against Syracuse, the Red Sox bid farewell to that misfortune as they scored eight of the game’s 15 combined runs to get back into the win column.

And despite not playing on Monday, the previously mentioned offensive production continued as Zavala evened the game with one swing during the top of the second. That hit marked his fourth-season home run as Hickey scored on the play.

But the fun wasn’t complete, as Blaze Jordan (run-scoring ground out), Thompson (run-scoring single), and Hickey (two-run home run) helped ensure Worcester moved ahead for good with four combined runs during the top of the third inning.

Though the Red Wings cut into their deficit with multiple runs in the fifth and seventh innings, Red Sox relief pitchers Bryan Mata (two) and Jose Adames (two) finished the game with back-to-back scoreless innings as they struck out four of the final six batters to ensure their team emerged victorious.

Though Worcester left six runners on base, they finished 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position and recorded 14 of the game’s 22 hits. The Red Sox have also scored 19 combined runs during their last two games.

On the opposing side, Rochester starting pitcher Cade Cavalli allowed eight hits, seven earned runs, two walks, and struck out two in 3.2 innings.

The Red Wings also finished 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position as they stranded five runners on base and committed the game’s lone error.

Worcester will attempt to earn its third consecutive win against Rochester on Wednesday at 1:05 p.m.
