SANFORD – In a game-changing move, Jorge Burgos of the Mainers sealed the deal with a grand slam, scoring four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, bringing the score to a decisive 8-0 win over the Blue Sox on Tuesday.
The Blue Sox mustered up only three hits in Tuesday night’s loss against the Sanford Mainers. Although Valley lost by eight runs, it gave up those runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Valley has lost two games in a row and evens its record at 5-5.
Gregory Shaw pitched a great game, giving up zero runs and only four hits in five innings. Shaw has only let up one run this season in 12 2/3 innings pitched.
Mainers’ starter Connor Ball outlasted Shaw, demonstrating his endurance by giving up just three hits in 5.1 innings pitched. This strong defensive performance played a significant role in the Mainers’ victory.
Jax Traeger came into the game for the Blue Sox in the bottom of the sixth and gave up three runs on three hits. Traeger had not given up a single run entering the game Tuesday night this season. He also had given up just one hit in three appearances.
Matt Travisano hit an RBI single, Raymond Velazquez scored on a wild pitch, and Burgos hit a sacrifice fly.
Conor Wolf came into the game at the bottom of the eighth for his fourth relief appearance. He hadn’t given up more than one run in his three prior games. Wolf gave up five runs on three hits, including Burgos’ grand slam.
The Blue Sox host the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks at MacKenzie Stadium on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. EDT. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
