Va. officers use cruiser to disarm man trying to break into church with pickaxe

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. — A man attempting to break into a church with a pickaxe was struck by a deputy’s vehicle after he allegedly threatened law enforcement, WSET reported.

Campbell County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Monday evening to Cross Point Church, where members reported that a suspect was trying to force entry with a pickaxe, according to the report. Witnesses took shelter inside as deputies arrived.

The man ignored orders to drop the weapon and walked toward a nearby gas station. As he moved into the roadway, a deputy repeatedly instructed him to drop his weapon.

When another deputy arrived, the man allegedly wielded the pickaxe in a threatening manner toward an officer. The deputy then slowed his vehicle and struck the man, disarming him.

Despite being hit, the man continued to resist arrest but was eventually taken into custody. He was treated for minor injuries before being released back into law enforcement custody.

The man faces multiple charges, including disorderly conduct, assault on law enforcement without battery, obstruction of justice, refusal to identify and resisting arrest, according to the report. The case remains under investigation.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Spencer Evans said that while it was too early to call the incident an act of terrorism, it had “some of the hallmarks” and a “potential political agenda”
