A 43-year-old Uxbridge police officer, who was killed when he was hit by a passing tractor-trailer on an icy Route 146 while helping another driver last week, was remembered in his obituary for his warm spirit and appreciation for life.
Stephen LaPorta was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the morning of Jan. 7. On Friday, his body was returned to Uxbridge from the medical examiner’s office in Westfield.
LaPorta became a full-time officer in Uxbridge in 2024, fulfilling a lifelong dream after serving as a dispatcher and part-time officer in Mendon, Uxbridge and Millville, according to the obituary.
“His family and the department deeply mourn his loss and honor his unwavering commitment, service, and dedication to the community,” the obituary reads.
Outside of work, LaPorta was known as a “kind, selfless, and compassionate person who always put others before himself,” the notice continues. “He was someone people could rely on.”
LaPorta found great joy in spending time with his loved ones, including his wife of 17 years and his son. An avid Boston sports fan, LaPorta never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox. He also loved music and had a specific fondness for Kenny Chesney, according to the obituary.
“These passions reflected Stephen’s warm spirit and appreciation for life beyond his service,” the obituary reads.
Visiting hours for LaPorta will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church in Franklin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the church at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
