Unusual warmth continues Tuesday with rain, cooler temperatures on the way across Mass.

Massachusetts is set for another day of above-normal temperatures and dry conditions Tuesday, thanks to a ridge of high pressure over the North Atlantic.

But before temperatures rise, the Bay State will be dealing with some early-morning fog and a low layer of clouds. The low cloud layer, or stratus, should be mostly concentrated over the Connecticut River Valley as well as along the South Coast, according to National Weather Service forecasters. Daybreak should lead to the clouds dissipating.

Temperatures should range from the mid-70s to low-80s on Tuesday, with a gusty southwest wind developing as the day goes on.

A cold front is expected to move in overnight Tuesday, bringing with it some much-needed rainfall.

“Precipitable water values of 1.5-2.0 inches should lead to a widespread rainfall of 0.5-1.0 inches when all is said and done. Not seeing much potential for thunderstorms, but cannot completely dismiss the idea,” forecasters wrote.

Thursday and Friday will be dry in the wake of the rain, but significantly cooler than earlier in the week, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to low-60s. Low temperatures are expected to bottom out in the 20s or 30s in most parts of the state on Thursday night, with frost and freeze conditions possible.

Temperatures should moderate on Saturday as conditions stay dry. But the forecast for Sunday and Monday, forecasters wrote, is far more complex.

“We will be watching a potential Hybrid coastal storm off the mid Atlantic/southeast coast,” forecasters wrote. “There is considerable spread on whether or not this system will get far enough north to bring some rain/gusty winds to the region sometime Sunday into Monday or stays south and we remain dry.”

Otherwise, temperatures should stay seasonable, with highs in the 60s.
