Two died in a wrong-way crash on Saturday morning, Massachusetts State police said.
Officers responded to calls at around 1:30 a.m. after reports of a wrong-way operator driving south on Route north onto Route 95 north.
After state troopers responded to the scene, another call reported the wrong-way vehicle crashed into another vehicle at Route 95 north in Lexington.
The wrong-way operator, who was driving a 2019 Toyota Prius heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 95 at exit 49, when a 2001 Toyota RAV4 crashed head on to the opposing vehicle around exit 49B, police said.
The northbound vehicle rolled onto the driver side and was engulfed in flames, police said. While both drivers were removed from their vehicles by firefighters, the operators were dead on scene.
The roadway was reopened and cleared at around 7 a.m. following the crash, police said.
The names of the drivers have not been released. An investigation into the crash is underway, including why the southbound vehicle was driving the wrong way, police said.
