Truck driver hit with hammer on Mass. highway in road rage incident

A truck driver was seriously injured after being struck with a hammer in what State Police described as a road rage incident on Interstate 495 South Monday afternoon, leading to the arrest of two men.

State Police troopers went to a section of the highway in Bolton around 2 p.m. Monday for a report of an altercation with a weapon in the breakdown lane, David Procopio, a State Police spokesman, said in a statement. State Police believe the driver of a tractor-trailer was assaulted by two men who were occupants of a Volkswagen GTI hatchback in an incident of road rage.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was struck with a hammer during the assault, sustaining serious injuries. He was taken to Leominster Hospital, where he remained as of Monday evening, Procopio said.

The two men who struck the truck driver left the area before police arrived, prompting State Police to issue an alert for other agencies to search for the vehicle and suspects. A short time later, the men were seen in Marlborough, and stopped and detained by Marlborough police, Procopio said. A third occupant of the vehicle, a woman, was not charged.

One of the two men was taken to Marlborough Hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered during the road rage incident, State Police said.

The charges against the two men were not immediately released, and were “being finalized” as of Monday evening, according to Procopio.
