Trick-or-treaters might need winter coats this Halloween, despite normal October temperatures

Anyone going out on Halloween night will want to bundle up.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service expect a largely dry Friday evening in the wake of a storm expected to dump heavy rain on Massachusetts on Thursday. But strong westerly winds are likely on Friday night, making temperatures feel more like winter than fall.

The wind is expected to pick up in the mid-afternoon, with gusts of around 30 to 40 mph.

Higher elevations like the Berkshires and Worcester Hills, as well as coastal areas like the Cape and Islands, are likely to be at the greatest risk of strong gusts in that range, with a chance for winds faster than 40 mph.

The winds will make normal temperatures for late October on Friday evening feel about 10 degrees cooler. Forecasters expect temperatures to drop into the 40s to low 50s, with the wind making it feel more like the 30s and 40s.

“Overall, expect a gusty Halloween night,” forecasters wrote. “We advise securing any decorations that could easily fly away!”
