This iconic brand is closing its last factory in the U.S., moving to Mexico

The name synonymous in the United States for resealable containers, Tupperware, is closing its only factory in the country.

The company issued a worker adjustment and retraining notification (WARN) in South Carolina last week, announcing its 148 employees will be laid off starting in September.

The facility, located at 248 Tupperware Road in Hemingway, South Carolina, will be closed permanently, the notice read.

Manufacturing operations from the building will move to its location in Lerma, Mexico, according to a report from PennLive, first reported by the Orlando Business Journal.

Tupperware said the move will “improve its profit margin and service its debt load,” the Journal reported. This is the Orlando-based business’s only factory in the United States, it added.
