Three contestants competed in the Season 23 finale of “American Idol,” but only two made it to the episode’s final moments.
Breanna Nix was revealed as the second-runner up during Sunday night’s episode of the singing competition, which depicted the Texas artist facing off against fellow finalists Jamal Roberts and John Foster.
During the season’s last round, Nix performed “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus and “In Jesus Name (God Of Possible)” by Katy Nichole.
Roberts sang “First Time” by TEEKS and “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” by The Temptations, while Foster shared renditions of “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” by Toby Keith and “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver.
Votes from “Idol” fans across the country poured in during the six performances, and roughly one hour into the season finale, host Ryan Seacrest revealed Nix as this season’s third place winner.
Nix would ultimately take the stage one more time after the elimination to perform “Daddy’s DNA” with contemporary worship singer Brandon Lake.
The 25-year-old musician may not have won the “Idol” crown, but she did earn a new sense of confidence over the course of the competition. During the Top 7 round last weekend, Nix explained how far she’s come since her Season 23 audition, when she described herself to the judging panel as “just a stay-at-home mom.”
“When I look at myself in the mirror – the beginning of this journey and who I am now is just completely different,” she said.
The end of Sunday’s episode revealed Jamal Roberts as the next “American Idol” champion.
