When Breanna Nix auditioned for Season 23 of “American Idol,” she introduced herself to the judging panel as “just a stay-at-home mom.” Now, as one of this year’s remaining seven contestants, the singer says she’s “completely different” than the person who shyly scored a ticket to Hollywood.
During Sunday night’s Disney-themed episode of the singing competition, the Texas “Idol” hopeful chose to perform “Reflection” from the 1998 film “Mulan.”
“When I look at myself in the mirror – the beginning of this journey and who I am now is just completely different,” she said, explaining her song selection. “When I tried out, I didn’t even think I’d get past the judges, and then here I am in the Top 7.”
The remaining seven contestants had two chances to impress viewers during Sunday’s episode: first during a round of performances of iconic Disney songs, and again when the singers each shared a Mother’s Day tribute. Actor, playwright and singer Lin-Manuel Miranda was the week’s guest mentor, and tapped into his experience as a Disney soundtrack composer to help the contestants prepare.
When working with Miranda, Nix said she believed in herself now “a lot more than I did starting the show.”
“You’re in the final seven, this is already a victory,” Miranda told Nix.
The shift in Nix’s attitude must have been palpable, because judge Carrie Underwood singled out the singer’s transformation when commenting on her performance.
“I honestly was fighting back tears just seeing you guys’ journey throughout this whole show, and watching you all — you especially — just grow and evolve,” Underwood said. “You just look like you belong exactly where you are.”
Judge Lionel Richie also praised Nix’s “poise and grace,” as well as her ability to emote during the performance.
Much like past weeks, “Idol” fans voted during Sunday night’s episode to determine which five contestants would advance, and which two “Idol” hopefuls would go home. The end of the episode revealed that Mattie Pruitt and Gabby Samone had been eliminated from the competition.
Nix will perform again Monday night in another Disney-themed round of the competition, where she and the other four contestants will perform songs by their favorite Disney heroes and villains. The following — and final — episode of Season 23 is scheduled for next Sunday, May 18.
