The Westfield News Scoreboard: Shea Hurley tosses two-hitter, Grace Trempe homers in Bombers’ Round of 32 win

MIAA D-II SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

ROUND OF 32

No. 5 Westfield 12, No. 28 Woburn Memorial 0 (5 inn.)

Westfield senior pitcher Shea Hurley tossed a two-hit shutout and Grace Trempe blasted a a two-run home run as fifth-seeded Westfield shut out No. 28 Woburn Memorial in a Round of 32 state tournament game Sunday.

Hurley struck out 10 batters.

Alejandra Strange went 3-for-3 for Westfield. Strange, Hurley and fellow Bomber Sydney LaPanne each drove in three runs.

MIAA D-II GIRLS LACROSSE TOURNAMENT

No. 1 Notre Dame Academy 19, No. 4 Westfield 4

Westfield’s season came to an end at the home of the tournament’s No. 1 seed Sunday.

Kara Racicot led Westfield with two goals. Kiera St. Peter and Milana Shuman had two goals apiece for Westfield. Ellie Adams had two assists.

Westfield goalie Leena Azam finished with 10 saves.

MIAA D-II BOYS VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

ROUND OF 32

No. 2 Westfield 3, No. 31 Granby 0

The Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class A boys volleyball champion Westfield Bombers opened up the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division II tournament with a sweep of Granby on Saturday, 25-11, 25-14, 25-14.

Zach Kukharchuk (seven kills, eight digs, two blocks), Gio Gonzalez (eight kills, four assists, four aces, nine digs, 2 ½ blocks), Bogdan Kuzin (six kills, dig, 4 ½ blocks), Max Yurtuc (25 assists), and Nolan Rodgers (20 digs) paved the way for a Westfield victory.

MIAA D-IV SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

PRELIMINARY ROUND

No. 30 Blue Hills 4, No. 35 Southwick 1

The seeds held to form as No. 35 Southwick (10-11) hit a roadblock in Canton against No. 30 Blue Hills (9-9) in the opening round of the state Division IV softball tournament on May 31. The Rams closed out the regular season with four straight wins to qualify for the tourney with a .500 record.

MIAA D-II GIRLS TENNIS

ROUND OF 32

No. 5 Amherst, No. 28 Westfield 0

No. 5 Amherst (13-3) shut the door on No. 28 Westfield (6-10) in the state Division II Round of 32 with a shutout May 31. The Bombers won a 3-2 thriller against No. 37 South High Community School (13-4) in the preliminary round to earn a trip to play the Hurricanes.
