WRESTLING
Despite graduating seven seniors and returning with just four veterans from its varsity squad, the Westfield High School wrestling team delivered a nice showing this past weekend at the Nighthawk Tournament at Holyoke High School.
Jovian Marrero, Kevin Taralunga, Joe Pouliot, Oleksandr Nosenko, Dan Kulyak and Yaqub Sidow wrestled in their first ever matches for Westfield. Each of those Bombers managed to pull out wins in their debuts and add team points, putting a notch on their belt.
“Our new wrestlers stepped up this weekend and had tremendous showings and wins when it mattered the most,” Westfield wrestling coach Dave Osiecki said.
Some of Westfield’s returning wrestlers were able to grab pins and technical falls, eliminating the competition in their weight classes.
Morgan Roy, Gavin Fabiani, Alex McCann, Ethan Houle and fourth-place finisher and heavyweight Anthony Lytvynchuk each delivered statement performances by beating local competition in the 16-team tournament field.
“[Our wrestlers] are only getting stronger by the day,” coach Osiecki said. “[They] are gearing up for their next match.”
Westfield next travels to Franklin Tech on Dec. 17.
INDOOR TRACK
Two Westfield High School indoor track athletes medaled at the MSTCA Winterfest at Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Dec. 13.
Nessa Gibson finished runner-up in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.97. Alec Piepergerdes placed third in the 1000 meters (2:41.95).
