Tenn. officer killed after suspect opens fire in driveway confrontation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An officer was killed following a violent encounter with a suspect in Selmer, Tennessee, the Selmer Police Department said in a news release.

The incident began just after 3:00 p.m. on Dec. 14 when the Selmer Police Department received reports of a suspicious man in the 100 block of New Bethel Road. Witnesses told officers the suspect had attempted to force his way into a residence and fired multiple shots into the door before fleeing on foot, according to police.

Officers responding to the scene were informed the suspect had crossed the street. Sergeant Rick Finley, who was working part-time with the Selmer Police Department and full-time with the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office, located the suspect in a driveway.

According to police, the suspect physically attacked Finley before fatally shooting him. Moments later, Lieutenant Ron Pilkington of the Selmer Police Department arrived on the scene and returned fire, killing the suspect.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate the incident at the request of the 25th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
