Takeaways from Patriots-Jets Week 3 game? ‘Zach Wilson’s atrocious’ (Podcast)

The Patriots earned their first win of the season on Sunday against the New York Jets thanks in part to Zach Wilson having a terrible game.

While the Jets quarterback didn’t turn the ball over, he took a safety and completed 50% of his passes in the Week 3 loss. Coach Robert Saleh continued to express confidence in Wilson as their starter. But it’s unclear just how much longer the Jets will stick with him.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” MassLive Patriots reporters Chris Mason and Mark Daniels share their takeaways from the 15-10 win. One of their biggest takeaways was just awful Wilson looked all game.

“Right off the bat, I think that was probably my biggest takeaway from the game is just how bad Zach Wilson looks. It feels hyperbolic, but he might be the worst starting NFL quarterback I’ve seen,” Mason said. “And this could be also because we’ve seen him five times. Now he’s 0-5 against (Bill) Belichick And Bill just has a way of making him look completely lost.

“And people will point to, ‘Oh, he didn’t turn the ball over yesterday.’ It’s like, Well, he did take a safety and he still completed 50% of his passes on a day when the Patriots were absolutely daring the Jets to throw the ball,” he added. “They came out and their base defense played more of that than we had seen. … Zach Wilson couldn’t do anything.”

Daniels agreed, adding that the Jets should start making calls in order to get another quarterback on their roster.

“Zach Wilson was 18 of 36 for 157 (yards). Half of his incomplete passes were thrown away. The Patriots were playing a blend of man and zone, they were playing a lot of zone coverage. You’re right, they were daring him to throw the ball and he couldn’t,” he said. “And so watching this game over again this morning, and I’m like, ‘You know what? Zach Wilson is by far the worst quarterback I’ve ever seen start this many games in the NFL.’ Yeah, there’s there’s been some backups here and there against the Pats that have been pretty bad.

“Zach Wilson’s atrocious. The Jets have to do something else. They have to call Matt Ryan or Carson Wentz. Honestly, maybe call the Patriots about Bailey Zappe because Bailey Zappe’s better than Zach Wilson. It was so bad,” Daniels added. “It’s one of those things that the Patriots got in there, they got out they got to win. That’s great. That’s the most important thing, right? Just getting a win in the win column. But man does it help having Zach Wilson in the division for one more year and two games on the schedule.”

The Patriots and the Jets meet again in Week 18, and there’s no telling who the quarterback will be when that game rolls around.
