SUV stolen from university lot leads Westfield Police on high-speed chase

WESTFIELD – A white Kia Santa Fe SUV stolen from a parking lot at Westfield State University led police on a chase through city streets in the early hours of Sept. 30, reaching speeds up to 100 mph before police called off their pursuit for safety reasons.

At 12:51 a.m. on Saturday, officers with WSU’s campus police contacted the city’s Police Department requesting assistance stopping the SUV it believed was stolen from the university’s South Lot, Westfield Police Capt. Steve Dickinson said.

Campus police officers reported to city police that the white Kia was displaying a Rhode Island license tag registered to a red Mitsubishi. As they attempted to stop it, it took off on Western Avenue, headed southeast toward downtown, at speeds at 80 mph or higher, Dickinson said.
