FOXBOROUGH – Stefon Diggs wasn’t around enough during the voluntary OTAs, and hasn’t participated enough on the field during workouts to have a fully-formed view of his new quarterback.
But from the little he’s seen and experienced, Diggs can’t help but be a fan of Drake Maye.
“As far as personality-wise, he’s a dog. You could tell he’s a dog from the get-go,” Diggs said Tuesday during his media availability. “I can see he’s committed to the process. He wants to play well. I know he’s been here all spring, so just to see him out there — and he’s been real helpful, too.”
Diggs said he wants to get through his knee rehab from ACL surgery in October, and hopes to become an important outlet for Maye on the field.
“Even though I haven’t been here as much, I’ve just been trying to get right,” Diggs said. “I’ve just been trying to get right physically and mentally; like being in the right space so when it’s time to go, I’m right there for him.”
It seems like a mutual admiration society. During his availability Monday, Maye also spoke highly of the four-time Pro Bowl receiver.
“He seems like an awesome teammate. He’s my locker mate, one down from beside me. We talk all the time,” Maye said of Diggs. “He’s a veteran in this league. He’s made a lot of plays, played in a lot of big time games. Just an awesome voice for the receiver room, for this offense … Once he recovers, and he’s getting back out there, I’m looking forward to being able to throw him some footballs. It’s always good having a guy like that on your team.”
Maye also praised Diggs’ work ethic, and loves how the receiver is not afraid to ask questions about certain plays. The Patriots quarterback appreciates the communication, and feels he’s better for it.
“He’s seen a lot of different things, played a long time in this league,” Maye said. “It’s been great for me.”
