State: Southwick school district must amend bullying policy following civil rights violation

SOUTHWICK ― The Southwick school district broke federal civil rights law when it failed to protect a victim of racial bullying last year, and now must have systemic changes in place by early April, according to a recently released state decision.

The decision stems from incidents perpetrated upon Southwick Regional student Skyla Lopez, who is Black, and another Black student. On Feb. 9, 2024, they were added to a group chat on Snapchat titled “Black lives L__,” which included a mock “slave auction” where about seven white students bid on Skyla and the other student for $2 and $4.
