St. John’s Prep QB Chris Vargas back from injury, starts in Div. I state championship game (video)

St. John’s Prep’s star quarterback is back from injury and starting in the Division I state championship.

Vargas had been sidelined with a leg injury since the team’s first round playoff game against Framingham, but warmed up pre-game in full pads with the Eagles on Saturday and took to the field on their first drive. The sophomore is playing with a brace on his knee.

The team’s backup, John Budrow, has started for the Eagles in its last three games against Leominster, Central Catholic and Xaverian on Thanksgiving.

Prior to this season, Vargas became the highest ranked football recruit in Massachusetts history. 247sports has Vargas as the No. 2 sophomore quarterback in the nation, and he already has offers from Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, and Texas A&M.

In the regular season, Vargas helped the Eagles to an 8-0 record and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Prep averaged 44 points in the regular season with the sophomore dominating through the air, connecting with fellow sophomore Riley Selvais for big gains.
