Springfield school dealing with drug paraphernalia in playground battling to lock gates

SPRINGFIELD — Every day before school starts and again before recess, Principal Chris Sutton or his head custodian search the grounds. They dutifully log their finds: Three needles, 15 nip containers, one needle and four needle caps.

The log of drug paraphernalia found on the field at the Rebecca Johnson School goes on for pages. On the last day of summer vacation, a tour around the building on Catherine Street turned up makeshift drug pipes, discarded baggies that held fentanyl or heroin and countless nip bottles.
