Springfield renews pawn shop licensing, but takes a step to protect against theft

SPRINGFIELD – Pawn brokers will continue to document information from each person who hawks an item and must keep items received for at least a month to help police track stolen items.

The City Council also raised the annual renewal fee for a pawn brokers license from $100 to $200 this month, formalizing the price charged for several years.

Police Officer Chad Joseph, a detective with the property crimes division, urged the City Council to renew a clause in the pawn brokers ordinance that was expiring, saying it helped victims of robberies.
