Springfield opts for national search for school superintendent

SPRINGFIELD – The School Committee will conduct a national search to find its next superintendent, aided by an outside organization and attorney.

Debate over how to go about the search lasted well over three hours Thursday and was interrupted occasionally by audience members, who clapped every time they agreed with a point. At one point, a person watching argued with committee members while Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, chairman of the committee, tried to gain control.

About 20 people, including several students, demonstrated in front of the Roger L. Putnam School before the committee meeting started, demanding an open and transparent process led by an independent agency.
