Springfield kicks off public week with speakers saying there is so much to be done

SPRINGFIELD — A century ago, 30% of all children died after birth and the average life expectancy was about 40. Now the average life expectancy is a little over 76 years old and most of those gains are due to public health policies.

Those policies ensure access to clean drinking water, proper sewage treatment, vaccines and food safety, said Haner Hernandez, chief of public health for the New North Citizens Council.
