Springfield firefighters finish extinguishing 16-hour blaze: Now searching for cause as ‘massive pile’ burns

SPRINGFIELD — Fire investigators are searching for the cause of a massive blaze in a scrap metal yard that burned for roughly 16 hours, as nearby residents aired concerns about impacts from the thick, black smoke that spewed from the blaze.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 10:30 a.m., Saturday, after extinguishing the last of the smoldering debris. No one was injured and the fire did not spread beyond the mountain of scrap metal which ignited Friday evening, Fire Capt. Drew Piemonte said.
