SPRINGFIELD — The city is considering doubling the cost of tossing mattresses and box springs after a two-year surge in the number being disposed has overwhelmed the budget.
Officials also want to implement a system of fines, crack down on the disposal of radioactive waste and reduce the time that people can leave “free” items on the curb.
Over the past two or three years there have been a number of changes in state regulations for solid waste disposal and at the same time the city has faced several new problems, prompting a need to update some of its rules and regulations for refuse collection, said Department of Public Works Director Christopher Cignoli.
