Springfield College to rename parts of campus, citing cultural appropriation

After much back and forth among the college community, Springfield College’s president Mary-Beth Cooper and the board of trustees decided on Monday evening to rename parts of campus in an attempt to address the appropriation of Native American cultures and history.

The changes include retiring the term “sti-yu-ka” for the spring games and ending the use of the terms “council ring” and “seven fires” for East Campus, according to a document obtained by MassLive.
