Springfield Central uses ground game to overpower Lowell, advance to Div. I semifinal

Springfield Central celebrating its win over Lowell in the Division I quarterfinalSam MacGilpin

SPRINGFIELD — As Lowell’s Joshua Amankwaah took an interception 20 yards to the house against Springfield Central quarterback Jareth Staine with 10:59 left to go in the second quarter Friday night, a rare wave of silence hit the Golden Eagles sideline and bleachers.

The Red Raiders went up 7-0 with a solid amount of momentum, but Lowell’s problem? Central’s Anthony Whaley was more than ready for the next play. Whaley received the ensuing kickoff at Central’s own 30 yard line, then burst to the right sideline. He got caught up in a pile of players, before miraculously finding a way out to the far side of the field for a kickoff return touchdown.
