Springfield approves additional $19M in school projects

SPRINGFIELD — The city is continuing its ongoing campaign to improve school buildings with an additional $19.6 million in spending to upgrade its largest school and three smaller buildings that are each nearly 100 years old or older.

The projects call for installing new windows and doors at Central High School, which has nearly 2,000 students, and will replace roofs at Samuel Bowles, Glenwood and Sumner Avenue Elementary schools, said Peter Garvey, director of capital asset construction for the city.

“We’re being funded 80% of all eligible costs by the Massachusetts (School) Building Authority for the projects,” he said.
