Springfield airs concerns about scrap metal businesses following massive fire

SPRINGFIELD — A routine management change for a long-established metal recycling company sparked a City Council discussion about the recent massive fire at a different scrap yard and the overall safety of the industry.

Councilor Sean Curran asked to delay voting Monday on the petition that would turn the management of the Acme Realty Enterprises recycling yard on Napier Street over to Iron Bar LLC of Waterbury, Connecticut. He asked for 30 additional days to learn more about safety issues at the multiple scrap metal businesses in the city.
