Spring in Springfield brings annual return of illegal dirtbikes

SPRINGFIELD — The change of seasons will bring buds on the trees, the return of migrating birds, and the annual emergence of illegal dirt bikes and ATVs to city streets.

The spring has also brought out a crop of police who have already cracking down on the dirt bikes under the zero-tolerance policy the city has had for at least five years, said Police Chief Lawrence E. Akers.

“The weather has warmed up and unfortunately the marauders continue their negative actions that puts not only vehicular traffic in harm’s way but pedestrian traffic and puts themselves in harm’s way,” Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said in announcing the annual crackdown on the bikes and all-terrain vehicles in the city.
