‘Split second away from tragedy’: Video shows SUV nearly hitting Fla. trooper, deputy

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper and a Volusia County sheriff’s sergeant narrowly avoided being hit by an SUV that veered off Interstate 95 while they were responding to a crash, NBC Miami reports.

The incident occurred as the two were assisting at the scene of a vehicle that had struck a deer on April 13, according to NBC Miami. Dashcam video released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shows the trooper and sergeant walking along the shoulder of the highway just moments before both run off camera. Seconds later, an SUV crashes into the sergeant’s marked patrol vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, the SUV then struck the rear of the car involved in the deer crash before spinning back onto the interstate, where it came to a stop.

Neither the trooper nor the sergeant was injured. Body camera video shows the two quickly checking on the driver of the car that hit the deer, who appeared alert and mentioned possible whiplash.

Authorities have not said whether the SUV driver was injured or if charges are being considered.

The sheriff’s office issued a reminder for drivers to remain alert and move over for emergency vehicles.

“PLEASE stay alert for emergency lights and move over for first responders, service vehicles and disabled vehicles on the side of the road. This was a split second away from tragedy.”
