Specialty coffee chain selling $1 drinks at new Boston location Tuesday

A sustainable coffee chain in the Boston area that focuses on working directly with farmers has opened a new café.

George Howell Coffee opened its newest location at Lyrik in Back Bay on Tuesday. The opening marked the company’s sixth location in the Boston area. Other cafes are located at The Godfrey in Downtown Crossing, Boston Public Market, Lovestruck Books in Cambridge and Newtonville. George Howell Coffee has a “Roastery” in Action.

To celebrate its grand opening, the Lyrik café will offer $1 small cups of hot, iced and cold brew coffee from 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday. In addition, the first 100 customers will get a complimentary limited-release George Howell Coffee Lyrik tote bag.

“At George Howell Coffee, we are not just roasters; we are interpreters of the intricate symphony created by farmers and nature,” George Howell, founder of George Howell Coffee, said in a written statement. “Lyrik’s dedication to art and culture mirrors our own, making it the perfect home for our newest café.”

Howell, who founded the coffee chain in 2004, has focused on sourcing and roasting the highest quality coffee for 50 years. Howell has taken hundreds of trips around the world to meet with coffee farmers and members of their communities since 1975. Today, George’s daughter Jenny carries on this legacy by continuing to forge strong relationships with farmers from around the globe.

“Opening at Lyrik is not only a full-circle moment for our family, it’s an exciting opportunity to continue my father’s legacy in the heart of Boston with partners who share our passion for creating places where culture and community collide,” she said in the statement. “This new space allows us to continue sharing the incredible craftsmanship of the producers that we work with, many of whom have become close friends and extensions of our family.”

George Howell Coffee’s Lyrik café serves the brand’s signature specialty beverages from cold brew to espresso drinks. Limited roasts are also available, as well as bagged coffee, pastries, sandwiches and toasts. Desserts are expected to make their debut later this year.

The Lyrik location will be open 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily.
