Southwick’s overpaying for other towns’ out-of-district tuition, officials say

SOUTHWICK — At a roundtable meeting last week, School Committee Chair Robert Stevenson announced that for the past nine years, the Southwick-Tolland-Granville school district has been covering tuition costs for all the students who leave the district for vocational school, but under state law, it should be the town governments paying those costs.

“I don’t think this is going to be as horrible as we originally thought,” said Stevenson during the meeting called by the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School Committee to discuss the issue with officials from the three towns who fund the district.

The issue was raised after Superintendent Jennifer Willard attended an annual conference in November and was told by the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education that towns, not the school districts, are responsible for paying tuition costs when a resident attends an out-of-district school.
