* Sometime soon, perhaps as soon as later this week, the Red Sox will get Triston Casas back on their active roster and Casas will rightfully again become the everyday first baseman.
In theory, that could put Dom Smith’s roster spot in some jeopardy. The Red Sox have others — Romy Gonzalez and Connor Wong — who can ably fill in at first base, leaving Smith without a natural spot in the field. With only four spots for position player reserves, the Red Sox have to value versatility.
