Snow moves in Mass. overnight as forecasters eye wintry mix, wild temperature swing

Snow and frigid temperatures are on the radar for Massachusetts Tuesday, but forecasters say a midweek warmup into the 50s — and a messy wintry mix — is also on the way.

Temperatures ranged between 0 and 19 degrees across the state before sunrise, according to the National Weather Service. Springfield was the chilliest part, while Pittsfield was at 2 degrees. Worcester and Boston were at 10 and 15, and Hyannis was in the upper teens.

By afternoon, Western and Central Massachusetts will reach the mid to upper 20s, though wind chills in the Berkshires could feel like -3. Eastern Massachusetts may break into the 30s.

Snow is expected statewide Tuesday night, forecasters say. Precipitation will begin by midnight in Western and Central Massachusetts and move eastward, hitting Eastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod & the Islands by 2 a.m.

Accumulations will range from a dusting to one inch, which could create slick spots on the road. Areas near the Connecticut border may see rain instead as temperatures approach freezing, though they will drop again overnight to the teens and 20s.

A major warmup is on the way Wednesday, with temperatures predicted to range from the low to mid 40s in Springfield, Worcester and Boston and hit 50 on Cape Cod & the Islands.

However, more snow could arrive Wednesday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. in the Berkshires and northern parts of Central Massachusetts where temperatures will hang in the 30s. Accumulations will total 1 to 3 inches, forecasters said.

The rest of the state may only see rain. Precipitation will taper off in the afternoon but may linger in Western Massachusetts.

Heavier snow is possible this weekend, forecasters warn. A storm system could hit Saturday night into Sunday, bringing a longer period of snow and the potential for ice and rain mixing in, though exact timing and expected accumulations are still being monitored.
