Those who plan on heading to family or friends for Thanksgiving Tuesday or Wednesday may run into some winter weather.
The National Weather Service said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that snow will start falling “across the high terrain of interior Massachusetts” after 7 p.m. on Nov. 21. This especially applies to areas in northern and Western Massachusetts, the weather service said in a statement. The anticipated snowfall is 1-4 inches.
As of Tuesday morning, western Franklin and western Hampshire counties were under a winter weather advisory, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters expect snow to start developing in Western Massachusetts between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday, and between 10 p.m. and midnight in Eastern Massachusetts.
The snow will switch over to rain by 6 a.m. Wednesday, and “a brief period of freezing rain is possible during the transition,” the weather service said.
There may also be “a period of accumulating snow for the higher terrain in the Berkshires and Worcester hills before changing to rain by daybreak,” forecasters said.
Therefore, residents in those areas should be weary of slippery roads during Wednesday morning’s commute, or for anyone looking to get a head start on their Thanksgiving travel.
The advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday. Other areas of southern New England could see heavy rain, especially late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, according to forecasters.
Expected rainfall is 1-2 inches, and will be heavier across Connecticut, Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts. The weather service said they are not expecting any flood concerns.
Strong winds across the state will pick up Wednesday morning, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible across the Cape and Islands, according to forecasters.
A wind advisory is also in effect for Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties from 4 a.m. to 4 pm. Wednesday. The strongest wind gusts will occur between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m., the weather service said.

The forecast for Thanksgiving calls for dry and near seasonable conditions before a cooling trend comes the first half of the weekend, forecasters said. Rain is likely Sunday night and Monday.
