Snow and rain are coming to Mass. Tuesday night and Wednesday: What to expect

Cold and wet weather is mother nature’s plan for every Massachusetts community over the next day or so.

Precipitation is expected across the state Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Most communities are set to experience both snow and rain.

Across Massachusetts, light snow is predicted to begin falling late Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday, but little to no accumulation is expected, according to the weather service. Overnight lows are predicted to drop into the upper teens and low 20s in western and central parts of the state, while eastern areas can expect temperatures in the mid 20s to low 30s.

As a warm front propelled by gusty winds moves through Massachusetts on Wednesday, most of the state is set to begin experiencing a downpour around 3 or 4 p.m., according to the weather service. These communities could get up to a quarter of an inch of rain during the latter half of the day.

Highs are expected to reach the upper 40s in Eastern Massachusetts on Wednesday, according to the weather service. Central and Western Massachusetts are predicted to see temperatures in the low 40s.

The only parts of the state that can expect to see snow accumulation on Wednesday are the Berkshires and the highest elevations in the Worcester Hills, according to the weather service. Temperatures in these communities are predicted to largely remain at or below freezing throughout the day, and 1 to 3 inches of wet snow is expected to fall.

The rain and snow are predicted to mostly taper out overnight on Wednesday, with lower elevations seeing less than a tenth of an inch of additional rain and higher elevations seeing half an inch to an inch of new snow, according to the weather service. Most of Massachusetts can expect patchy fog throughout the night as temperatures drop into the mid 20s to low 30s.

Aside from the Berkshires, which may see some light snow, communities across the state are predicted to experience a sunny, breezy Thursday, according to the weather service. Highs are set to rise into the mid 30s, and wind gusts could reach up to 37 mph.
