After days of below-freezing temperatures and lingering ice on sidewalks and side streets, a warm-up is underway across Massachusetts that could see all that ice finally melt away.
While it won’t be warm, per se, on Friday, high temperatures in the eastern part of the state should climb up to or beyond 32 degrees, the temperature at which ice melts. Breezy conditions will make it feel cooler than that, with wind chills in the teens to low-20s in the afternoon, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
Highs on Saturday should continue to moderate, climbing to the mid to upper 30s. The warming trend will continue on Sunday and through the beginning of the work week, as afternoon temperatures on Sunday are expected to reach the upper 30s or low 40s.
Tuesday and Wednesday could be the warmest days of the week, with highs “spread across” the 40s and even approaching 50 in the southeastern part of the state and Rhode Island.
But the warmth may not last long: a significant storm could barrel into the northeast Thursday night and Friday. That said, the exact contours of the storm remain a mystery this far out.
“There is still a ton of uncertainty when it comes to the track, what precipitation types are involved, and exact timing,” forecasters wrote. “Pounds of time to watch how this evolves.”
