It’s not often that you see a New England Patriots coach interviewed on the field. It’s even rarer to see one chatting while there’s live game action going on behind him.
That was the case Saturday for Josh McDaniels. The Patriots offensive coordinator put on a headset and chatted with the TV booth for WBZ’s preseason broadcast team of Devin McCourty, Jason McCourty and Scott Zolak.
The McCourty twins, who both played in New England while McDaniels was coaching there, had plenty of fun with their old coach.
Jason McCourty could have simply asked what it was like to be back with the Patriots for this third stint with the team. Instead, he noted how refreshed McDaniels looked.
“I got to say, you’re a lot slimmer. You look good. You like you’ve been working out on the beach and you returned a nice little tan,” Jason McCourty said. “How’s it feel to be back in New England?”
McDaniels took the question in stride, stressing how much it meant to be back “home” in New England.
“This is home to me and my family,” McDaniels said. “Look, the Lord does different things and puts different adversities in our life for a reason. But I couldn’t be more pleased to be back with coach Vrabel and his staff and this group of people, working for the Krafts. It’s been tremendous and looking forward to trying to do good things here as we try and build forward.”
While his brother focused on good McDaniels looked, Devin McCourty had a little fun wth the coach’s age. It wasn’t too long ago that McDaniels was coaching Tom Brady, who’s about the same age as him. Now, the 49-year-old McDaniels is coaching up 22-year-old Drake Maye.
So, Devin McCourty posed a question: Do they call you grandpa?
“They don’t. But I got grey hair now and you guys know why,” McDaniels said with a laugh. “This game will do that to you. But it definitely feels different. The first time I stepped foot in Foxborough, it was 2001 and I was 24 years old.
“To almost be 50 years old and still have an opportunity to work here, it’s been such a blessing for me and my family and I’m looking forward to this season,” McDaniels added.
The early signs have been positive for the Patriots since McDaniels’ return. New England beat the Washington Commanders by 30 in its preseason opener. On Saturday, the team had a 14-3 lead heading into halftime.
