The sister of an 18-year-old girl missing for nearly two weeks said the discovery of human remains likely belonging to the missing girl on Tuesday represented closure.
Investigators found human remains they believe are those of Kylee Monteiro, who was 11 weeks pregnant, at the Rehoboth home of her boyfriend, 22-year-old Gregory Groom, on Tuesday. Groom, who already faced domestic violence charges, is set to be charged with murder in connection with Monteiro’s death, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn said.
In a brief statement posted to Facebook, Kitty Monteiro, one of Kylee’s sisters, thanked her sister, Faith, and investigators for their “diligence, dedication, and nonstop hard work in resolving this case.”
“I know this is not the ending we all wanted but this is closure for us and this gives Kylee the opportunity to rest in peace with her mom and her baby,” Kitty Monterio wrote. “Without you guys, she might not have found peace for years. And that’s something that very few people get in cases like these.”
“I think it’s a good time to remind everyone to check in regularly with people, tell them you love them every chance you get, take photos every single day, and don’t ever forget that people love you. So many people. You will always be remembered Kylee and baby Eleanor,” the statement continued.
Groom will be arraigned in Taunton District Court Wednesday morning.
Monteiro was first reported missing on Aug. 7 by Groom. The domestic violence charges against Groom are tied to an incident the previous day, prosecutors have said.
Monteiro was last seen at Groom’s residence at 107 County St. in Rehoboth. Police conducted extensive searches for the girl and eventually obtained a search warrant for the County Street property.
During the execution of that search warrant, remains “consistent with” those of Monteiro were found, Quinn said. Officials are awaiting confirmation from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that the remains are indeed Monteiro’s.
Videos from the scene show an excavator arriving to the County Street area around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Monteiro’s family told WCVB she and Groom had argued before she disappeared. Her sister, Faith, wrote on Facebook that the family would be holding a vigil for Monteiro on Saturday.
The family also launched a GoFundMe for Monteiro, which now seeks donations to pay for funeral costs.
