WESTFIELD – The Sherman’s Mill bridge on Feeding Hills Road over Great Brook, which has been approved to be replaced by the state Department of Transportation, is currently undergoing repairs, according to a spokesperson with MassDOT.
“This work is being performed under a districtwide repair contract,” said John Goggin, a MassDOT communications analyst.
The bridge is at the intersection of Feeding Hills and Pontoosic Road. Little River Road ends about 200 feet before the bridge, switching to Feeding Hills.
He said the bridge’s existing end posts are being rebuilt and a new concrete end wall is being installed.
Work will take place daily between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., and is expected to be completed in April 2026, he said.
The work requires a temporary lane restriction, with traffic controlled by three temporary traffic signals.
“Drivers traveling through the affected area should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution,” he said.
In 2023, the MassDOT Project Review Committee approved replacing the bridge at an estimated cost of $4.6 million.
Construction is expected to start in 2027 and be completed by 2029.
It is currently in the preliminary design phase, according to MassDOT.
Commuters who regularly use the road were happy about the repairs.
“I drive the bridge every day. Just glad the bridge didn’t fall into the river. We will take the fix for now. That’s a win for me,” one resident posted.
