Several sharks spotted in Cape Cod Bay over 2-day period

White sharks have appeared around Cape Cod, with several appearing in the waters of Cape Cod Bay over a two-day period in the last week.

Around 15 sharks were seen or detected around the cape since Friday, Aug. 27, with two signs of shark predation also spotted on separate beaches, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy based in Chatham. All of these sightings were catalogued on the conservancy’s shark-tracking app, Sharktivity.

Within Cape Cod Bay, around seven of them were spotted between Aug. 25 and Aug. 26. One shark was seen north of Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable at around 4:02 p.m. on Aug. 25. Another shark had been seen in the area, which observers noted had “part of his tail fin bitten off.”

Another shark seen in the area was a juvenile white shark photographed by a person on a Hyannis Whale Watch boat north of Sandy Neck Beach at around 2:57 p.m. on Aug. 25. Later that day, a 10-foot-long white shark was spotted nearby at around 7:41 p.m. Another shark was seen earlier, northeast of Sandwich Beach at around 3:42 p.m.

One or three sharks were spotted north of Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable at around 9:45 a.m., 10:02 a.m. and 11:31 a.m. on Aug. 26.

Along with sharks, two signs of sharks hunting seals were found and catalogued on Sharktivity. At Race Point Beach in Provincetown, a dead seal with a bite was seen in the seen at around 11:18 a.m. on Aug. 24. Days later, on Aug. 27, a seal with a “big bite” was seen at Nauset Beach North in Orleans at around 1:33 p.m.

The conservancy tags and names white sharks typically seen swimming around the Cape’s coasts. These acoustic tags transmit data from shark detections in real time, with the results appearing on Sharktivity.

Since last week, four named sharks were detected. A male, 10-and-a-half-foot long white shark named Pearl was detected off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet at around 11:37 p.m. on Aug. 26.

Paulie showed up the next day off of North Beach Island at around 2:58 p.m. Then Jimbo appeared at around 6:42 p.m. on Aug. 28, swimming off the coast of Nauset Beach in Eastham.

Finally, Quadrilateral swam off Maguire Landing Beach in Wellfleet at around 10:31 a.m. on Friday. First tagged on Sept. 12, 2023, this male white shark is 10 feet long in size.
