Russell seeks to demolish collapsed Strathmore Mill

RUSSELL — Town officials are seeking to demolish the unstable remnants of the Strathmore Paper mill in Woronoco village after its partial collapse trapped three workers nearly a month ago.

But the work is likely to happen over the objections of the building owner, said Lt. Sean Shattuck of the Russell-Montgomery Police Department. Officials in Russell — population 1,643 — met Thursday night to discuss next steps and seek legal guidance. A town road running through the property is still closed, as it has been since the Nov. 11 collapse.
