Roman Anthony and Marcleo Mayer are more than just highly touted prospects both in Major League Baseball and the Boston Red Sox.
They’re close friends, roommates and were even promoted together from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester last year.
But Mayer left Anthony in Worcester after the Red Sox called him up on Saturday afternoon. Once Mayer said his goodbyes and took off for Fenway Park, Anthony took to Instagram to share a message to his teammate and friend.
“About time” Baseball America’s No. 1 prospect posted to Instagram story. “Go be you brother.”
Anthony told reporters at Polar Park that he and Mayer talked about getting the call every night.
“Just kind of wondering when it was going to happen, so for it to happen, it’s awesome,” Anthony said, via Telegram & Gazette’s Tommy Cassell. “It’s something I’ll never forget. So I was so proud of him.”
Mayer got to Fenway Park prior to Boston’s second game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles. The third baseman went 0-for-4 in his big-league debut, but returns to the Red Sox’ lineup on Sunday with another chance to collect his first MLB hit.
As for Anthony, he continues to put together a strong season in Worcester as he awaits his turn to get the news Mayer did on Saturday.
