Tom Brady got a statue. So what does Rob Gronkowski have in store?
The former tight end says he has plans to sign a one-day contract so he can retire as a member of the New England Patriots.
“Come back for a day, a weekend, whatever it is. So we’ll make it happen, and it’ll be a really, really cool moment,” Gronkowski told reporters. “It’s going to happen. We just don’t know when.”
Gronkowski was back in Boston this week to celebrate the opening of the “Gronk Playground” on the Esplanade. It turns out that Susan Hurley, the CharityTeams founder who helps make the playground a reality, was at the root of it.
Hurley reportedly approached Patriots chairman Robert Kraft about the idea of a one-day contract for Gronkowski. Kraft was apparently all for it.
“I like that a lot,” Gronkowski said. The reason why we’re really going to do that is because of Susan Hurley. She wants to see that happen. She’s been dreaming about that happening for a while. RKK gave her a thumbs up. So we’re gonna make it happen in the future, and it’s gonna be a special moment.”
Gronkowski played nine seasons with the Patriots during his career, winning three Super Bowl titles in New England. Gronkowski briefly retired after the 2018 season before coming back in 2020 to team up with Brady on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Gronkowski played two seasons in Tampa, winning one more Super Bowl title while reunited with Brady.
Known for his larger-than-life personality, Gronkowski remains a fan favorite in New England. A five-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro selection also one of the greatest players in franchise history.
