Report: Use of force declined in Springfield Police firearms unit in 2024

SPRINGFIELD — Police officers in Springfield’s firearms unit only pointed their weapons at 17 people, physically controlled nine and took down six during all of 2024, according to a report filed this week with a federal judge about the unit’s use of force.

The Firearms Investigation Unit, which does not engage in day-to-day policing but rather deals with individuals suspected of possessing illegal firearms, saw 17 incidents involving 26 people where officers used force last year.
